Southern California

Southern California presents a highly varied and tectonically shaped topography, where Pacific coastal plains and urban basins rise abruptly into rugged mountain ranges before descending toward broad inland deserts. Its relief is organized by the east–west Transverse Ranges, including the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains, and the northwest–southeast Peninsular Ranges, which extend through ranges such as the Santa Ana, San Jacinto, Santa Rosa, and Laguna mountains. Along the coast, low terraces, valleys, and foothills create a relatively narrow transition zone between the ocean and the mountains, while inland areas open into the Mojave and Colorado deserts, marked by basin-and-range terrain, alluvial fans, dry washes, mesas, dunes, isolated peaks, and volcanic landforms. The Salton Trough and Salton Sea form one of the region’s most striking low-elevation depressions, contrasting sharply with nearby high, fault-bounded mountain fronts. Overall, Southern California’s physical character is defined by abrupt elevation changes, steep canyons, arid basins, coastal lowlands, and a rapid progression from maritime landscapes to alpine ridges and desert plains.
