Mobile County

Mobile County lies on Alabama’s low Gulf Coastal Plain, where the landscape descends gently southward from modest inland uplands toward the tidal flats, marshes, bayous, barrier-island coast, and open waters of Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The relief is generally subdued but not uniform: the northern and western parts of the county form softly rolling, stream-dissected pine-covered terrain, with higher ridges around Citronelle and Semmes, while the Mobile area drops toward broad alluvial and estuarine lowlands along the Mobile, Tensaw, Dog, and Fowl river systems. Elevations remain mostly low, with coastal and bay margins near sea level, urban Mobile occupying slightly raised ground beside the bay, and the county’s highest terrain reaching a little over 360 ft (110 m) near Citronelle; overall, the physical character is that of a humid coastal plain shaped by river valleys, sandy uplands, wetlands, and the wide estuarine basin of Mobile Bay.
