Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista occupies a broad high-desert basin in southeastern Arizona, set at about 4,623 feet (1,409 m) above sea level at the foot of the Huachuca Mountains, where the terrain shifts sharply from open valley floors to rugged “sky island” relief. The city lies within the Upper San Pedro Basin, with the San Pedro River corridor just to the east and the Huachuca Mountains rising immediately to the southwest; nearby summits such as Miller Peak reach about 9,466 feet (2,885 m), creating a strong local elevation contrast of nearly 4,800 feet (1,460 m). The surrounding landscape is characterized by gently sloping alluvial fans, broad semi-arid plains, and intermittent washes that drain toward the San Pedro, while the nearby mountain fronts are steeper, dissected, and forested at higher elevations. This combination gives Sierra Vista a distinctive basin-and-range topographic character: spacious, relatively even highland terrain around the urban area, framed by abrupt mountain masses, foothills, and riparian lowlands that emphasize the contrast between desert valley, upland grassland, and elevated mountain relief.
