Die Burg wurde Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts errichtet und diente zum Schutz der Furt der Salzstraße durch die Zschopau. Diese Straße überquerte von Halle und Leipzig kommend hier den Fluss, um dann weiter über die damals dicht bewaldeten Höhen des Erzgebirges nach Böhmen und Prag zu führen. Im Jahre 1174 wird die Straße als antiqua semita Bohemorum genannt. In diese Zeit dürfte auch die Entstehung der Stadt fallen. 1286 erfolgte die erste urkundliche Erwähnung als „Schapa“, 1292 die Bezeichnung Zschopaus als civitas.
