Der Ort wurde 1333 als „Vorstlam“ erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Das Grundwort „lahm“ bedeutet abfallend, herabhängend, das Bestimmungswort „forst“ bezeichnet ein Waldgebiet. Damit wurde das Waldgebiet Kulmbacher Forst bezeichnet, das aufgrund seiner Lage auf einem Höhenrücken ursprünglich diese Eigenschaft hat.
