Der Flecken Fromoldeskirchen mit verstümmelter Martins-Basilika, 1238 Vorort einer Battenberger Kleinzent, war ursprünglich wohl eine karolingische Höhenwegs-Siedlung von Königsleuten. Im Jahre 1238 wurde die Gemeinde erstmals in einer Note des Erzbistums Mainz urkundlich erwähnt. Historisch dokumentierte Namensformen des Ortes waren: Fromolskirke (1238), Fromoldeskirchen (1291), Frumboldeskirchen (1359), Fromißkirchen (1394) und Brommelskirchen (1473). Über Jahrhunderte war der Ort von der Landwirtschaft auf kargen Böden und der Nutzung des Walds geprägt.
